The Southern Maryland Minority Chamber of Commerce Foundation, in partnership with Last Mile Broadband of Maryland LLC, was awarded a Rural Maryland Council (RMC) grant, to conduct broadband demand surveys and high-level broadband network designs in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties. Last Mile Broadband of Maryland LLC is the Lead on this project. The Town of Chesapeake Beach was a Supporter of the RMC Grant. The intent is to use the results of the surveys and engineering efforts to identify a town, city, area and/or development that would serve as a pilot project; in our efforts to bring affordable broadband services to rural communities. The survey and engineering results would also serve as the catalyst for applying for the 2018 USDA broadband funding cycles. We intend to begin the surveys in February 2018 and enlist your assistance in identifying areas in the Southern Maryland counties of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s that can not only benefit from the providing of affordable broadband services; but also fit the criteria that will assist us with obtaining the public and/or private funding required to make bringing broadband services to rural communities a reality.
